Barcelona

I was lucky enough to spend a week here in July of 2002. I had already made it to Madrid, but ever since the 1992 Olympics, and after hearing from fellow travelers, I had to see Barcelona. I was definitely not disappointed. The city is alive, whether you're walking down la Rambla, or lounging on the beach, there is always a feeling of excitement in the air. Tapas are finger foods sold at all bars, and are the best way to sample the local food. Wash some down with a glass of Sangria, a nice red Spanish wine, or a San Miguel beer. Be sure to try the Serrano ham, it's amazing.

Driving here is comparable to a demolition derby without the crashes. I had a blast racing fellow drivers stoplight to stoplight, it's really a game in the city. You will see thousands of scooters everywhere (just like Rome), and kids that look like they're 12 driving them. The only downside to Spain, in general, is theft. You really have to be smart, get a money belt, and never leave your stuff unattended. Other than that, Spain is heaven.

Highlights: La Rambla (street lined with shops and restaurants), La Sagrada Familia Church, Olympic Grounds, Picasso Museum
Things You'll Notice: Everyone smiles, the city is covered with art (from Gaudi's numerous buildings to even the streetlights), you can get tapas anywhere
