German Alps
I have seen the top of the mountain, and it is good. This was my first time in the Alps. After a ridiculously late night in Prague, my buddy Robbie and I drove straight from Prague down to the German / Austrian border to check out the scenery. Being from the great plains of Oklahoma, our initial reaction was definitely "Wow." The natural beauty here is off the scale. This is true Bavaria, and you will often see older people in traditional dress (including lederhosen) carrying around an Alpenstock (climbing stick). I have found Bavarians to be very jovial people, and when you are at 8,000 ft looking down on the Königsee (King's Sea), you could only imagine how happy you'd be most of the time if that was in your backyard.
We drove down the Deutsche Alpenstraße (German Alpine Road) - heralded as one of the most scenic roads in the world. It definitely lived up to its billing. Although we ran out of time and couldn't ourselves, I would recommend taking one of the cruises on the Königsee. We were able to take a lift to one of the peaks overlooking the Königsee to get some amazing pictures, and enjoy a hefeweizen at 8,000 ft.
